Bear with me as I rant about American Idol for a sec. I have a few grievances with American Idol this year. First, the contestants are not nearly as good as they have been in years past. I missed Hollywood week, so I didn’t get to see how each contestant did there, but it seems like there were people that we saw in auditions that did better than some of the people that they moved ahead. Also, the contestants don’t seem to be choosing good songs, and they aren’t doing a great job singing the songs that are good choices. Unfortunately, many of the contestants’ renditions of the songs sound (like Simon would say), like karaoke performances. Good ones mind you, but still. In my opinion, if you can’t sing the song as well or better than the original singer, or bring something new to the song that makes it your own, then don’t sing it!
The judges are really bugging me too. It’s their advice to the contestants that really bothers me. They seem to go back and forth, telling some contestants one thing, and others another. Like one week, they were chastising the girls for not changing the songs to make them their own, while at the same time telling the guys they should just sing the songs and not change them too much. A good example of this is their advice to Katie Stevens (the young girl with long, dark brown hair), and Aaron Kelly, (the young guy with spikey hair).
Katie has a mature voice for her age, and likes songs that are not your typical teen pop variety. In my opinion, this works for her, but the judges told her she needed to sing younger songs because she is young. Every week however, she gets worse and worse as she tries to please the judges by choosing songs that fit more with her age group.
Aaron, also has a voice that works well with songs that aren’t sung by people his age. Case in point, this past week he sang I’m Already There by Lonestar. In my opinion that it wasn’t a good song choice for him, because it’s not believable for a 16 year old to be singing as a father to a child, but Simon said that didn’t matter, and that it was a good song choice for him, and randy and Ellen didn’t seem to think it mattered either. Only Kara said she thought it wasn’t believable. This really bugs me. They rake Katie over the coals for singing songs that are apparently too old for her, except that she does a great job singing them, and when you’re listening to her you don’t care that they’re not “young songs”. Aaron, on the other hand, sings a song that is clearly not suited to him, and he doesn’t even do a great job singing it, and the judges don’t see anything wrong with it. Ugh!
Well, I think that’s a long enough rant. There may be more to come as the season continues.
